I had the pleasure to own a Mercedes EQA 350 for a year and now I own a BMW iX1 xDrive30. To be more precise, both cars belong(ed) to my wife. But that’s not the point here. I can really compare those two EVs. And as much as they play in the same league, they are quite different.
And I have to admit, while I am a BMW guy, the EQA did a great job, the best was that I sold it after a year for the same price as I actually bought it.
I bought my Marco Polo back in 2021 right after the small Updates that were applied in comparison to the previous model. The main reasons for me was the larger Screen in the cockpit and some smaller changes. Yes, to me the cockpit is probably more important than the camping features, otherwise I might be driving a VW California. More to that later.
I had the opportunity to drive both cars. The same day. And let me start with my own story. I love BEV. I drive a BMW i3s since 2018. And currently I am looking for a new Electric Vehicle. And even though I love BMW, I must admit that currently there are not many E-Options for me. So I started to look around. And 2 possible cars, are the mentioned Model 3 or the Polestar 2. So, lets drive.
What started to be the wish for having a convertible (again) finally worked out. Slightly differentl y than expected. I started with driving the Mazda MX5 RF, considered the BMW Z4 in both versions, the 3.0i as well as the Z4 M40i and ended up realizing, that even though it’s car number 3 in our parking lot, having only 2 seats makes things complicated sometimes. So the search continued and I started looking for a convertible with 4 seats.
This was my first ever visit to the IAA, the worlds largest Automotive trade show. I was there for business reason (so I was able to be there during the first days with much less visitors) but I also had some free time to see the IAA on my own.
My first impression: This is huge. On other trade fairs, companies build a booth, here they „only“ build the interior of the booth and take the whole hall as a booth (Mercedes). This was impressive.
Yesterday my wife an I were invited to the BMW i Summer Festival at the most beautiful party location south of Munich, La Villa. I was invited because I bought my current BMW i3s at the BMW Niederlassung München last year (plus a BMW X1 for my wife). And my general interest in buying another BMW (maybe the BMW Z4) might also have helped…
I recently had the feeling that I might „need“ a new car, a new toy, a convertible, a Roadster. And when you start thinking about Roadsters, at least at some point you will see the MX5.
But to be honest, I never thought of the Mazda MX5 as a car that could be of any interest to me. It’s for women (sorry for this stupid bias), it’s too small, it’s just a Mazda and maybe most important to me, there are just so many MX5 that it’s hardly something special.
After more than 10.000km in one year+, it is time to stop and review my experience with my BMW i3s. My first ever fully electric vehicle. Would I buy it (or another EV) again? Can I recommend the i3? To everyone?
How about BMWi3s real life range?
Let’s start with the most discussed topic when talking about EVs, the range. I own a 2018 BMW i3s with the 94 Ah battery pack. The official range depends on the used metrics / standards but let’s skip this and move on to the real world.
First you need to learn that a remaining range of 50km does not mean you need to go look for a „gas station“ like you would probably do in a ICE Car. In my case it just means you can go another 50km to work and back (so probably another week) before you just plug your car in during the night to get it fuelled up again over night. And it is really that easy, if you have a garage and/or a workplace where you can just plug in (in my case even for free at work).
I had the opportunity do drive the BMW Z4 M40i for two days in and around Munich. Let me start with a statement: the car is fantastic. Let’s find out why.
The price of the M40i is not that bad as it comes with some more extras
The M40i is – so far – the most powerful engine you can get for the Z4. First, the exterior incluedes the M-parts at the front and back that make the car look much more sporty and even more aggressive than the serial version. When you love this, the M-packages is included in the basis price of 63.750€ as are 18inch wheels, the adaptive sports suspension and the sporty differential lock.
